About Us

Our mission is to engage in all activities necessary to promote and further the interest of the senior citizens of Moore County and the surrounding area. This includes the promotion of economic, physical, mental, and nutritional welfare of the seniors of this area through education, activities, and a nutritious noon meal served Monday through Friday.

The Moore County Senior Center had its beginning in the year 1977 when a group of local citizens felt that it was time for an organization to be dedicated to the needs and interests of the elderly of Dumas and surrounding areas in Moore Country. The purpose of the center was to engage in all activities necessary, useful, or expedient, through operative measures and active organization, to promote and further the interest of the senior citizens of Moore County, Texas. This includes the promotion of the economic, physical, and educational welfare of these seniors.

In the beginning, the first few meetings were held in the county courthouse. As the group became more organized, the Noon Lions Club let them meet weekly at their building in order to all for a weekly luncheon to be provided with their meetings. This continued until 1984 when the senior room at the Y.M.C.A. became their new home. The group expanded with numbers and various activities until a new home was in need to accommodate everyone.

In the year 2001, the Moore County Seniors were able to raise funding for, along with the donation of the land by the City of Dumas, a building to be constructed. This allowed for a much larger room for the midday lunch as well as more activities. The kitchen provided a means to prepare our nutritious meals in a larger, more effective manner.

For years, the center thrived and provided precious memories for our seniors. In 2020, however, we, as much of the world, were hit hard by the devastating virus. We were forced to close our doors, yet we knew we still needed to provide for the seniors the best we could. With the help of our volunteers, we were able to provide home-delivered meals as well as a drive-up style option that allowed for the seniors able to drive to come to get their meals. This continued for months into 2021.

On April 3, 2021, however, we were finally able to open our doors to the public. The unfortunate loss of many beloved members has ached in our hearts still and took a toll on the number of those who attend. Despite this, we still aim to provide the best for our seniors and work to growing our membership once again.
